Motivation is a very personal thing. What motivates you, whether money, a deadline, penalty or reward may not motivate another person.
Motivation can also vary from day-to-day. One day you can feel highly motivated to do something and next day, before you know it, that motivation has vanished. In the working environment, understanding what motivates you can be key to becoming a successful and highly productive member of a team.
Having a goal that excites you will naturally motivate you. And when you get a step closer to achieving that goal you will feel good and have a sense of achievement – rather than feeling bad about how much you haven’t done.
Whilst a goal gives you focus and something to work towards, sometimes you can find yourself feeling de-motivated and struggling to find the enthusiasm you once had. More often than not this can come back to better goal setting!
You need to be clear about why you want to do something, which makes it more compelling to the conscious and unconscious mind. But sometimes this is more difficult than it sounds. In NLP we practice many skills that can help with motivation and setting goals. Here are 3 tips that can help you to maintain your motivation.
- Imagine what it would be like: Picture what life would be like once you achieve your goal. Imagine how good it would feel to achieve what you have set to achieve. What will you have? What do you see/hear/feel? Imagining a positive future will push you to achieve it.
- Turn negative self-talk into positive self-talk: The way we talk to ourselves can make or break motivation. If you wouldn’t let someone else say certain things to you, why do you let yourself?
- Set mini goals: Set priorities and mini goals within your overall picture. When you reach these you will have a great sense of achievement and be one step closer to the bigger aim. The more achieved, the more motivated you will be!
