I’m really passionate about personal growth and I’m always really curious about what enables people to grow, and what enables me to grow (as I’m always growing).

So I thought that in this week’s Prescription for Success I’d talk about what personal growth means and consider some key components of personal growth. Watch the video and have a think about your own personal growth.

I think it’s about your knowledge, your skills and competency in a particular area of your life. Maybe in an area where you want to be able to think and feel and grow to be really excellent to get the results that you want in your life.

There are certain components to this. In my view there’s:

  • Self-awareness – is about being aware of your own qualities and other people’s qualities so that you are in control.
  • Self-confidence -is being aware of your strengths and weaknesses so you can do whatever you want to do and reach your goals.
  • Self-love – is your ability to take care of yourself and to love yourself which gives you a feeling of self-worth.
  • Self-acceptance is about accepting yourself on the journey as you are now. I always think of personal growth as a journey and whether you think you’ve got there or you are on the way, you can accept yourself for where you are and take some lessons as things happen.
  • Self-compassion – is when you take care of yourself no matter what happens – so be compassionate if you make a mistake or other people think you make a mistake and just say to yourself “that’s fine”. Say  “I’m on the journey of personal growth and I’ll learn from that”
  • Self-reliance – That’s being able to rely on yourself and not be dependent on other people and be at cause (in charge of your feelings and decisions).

So that to me is what personal growth is.

I’m guessing – a bit of a mind read- that you may have your own principles for success and I’m wondering if they are the same as mine or not? Do let me know.

Have a watch of the video and then think about what you could or want to work on OR  congratulate yourself on a Great Job!

Each principle of success is one that I review every week and take some action on:

  • Know our outcome – so get a goal that you are motivated by , that is something that  you can start and keep going on your own and find a way of remembering that every day.
  • Take action – I recently did a review of “The Sausage Machine” in my closed FB group called One Step Closer . (Courtesy of Richard Wilkins – the Minister of Inspiration). Here’s the link to join. Its based on the premise that if you want a beef sausage, you have to put the right ingredients in – i.e. beef . A lot of people spend their time waiting for something to happen and don’t take the right action to create the sausage.  If you have limiting beliefs about your self or others, then it becomes difficult to create what you want by taking action.
  • Having sensory acuity – this is where you notice small changes in your physiology or other’s physiology. An example of that would be flushing or drooping your shoulders or a change in the size of other’s pupils or their skin tone. I expect you’ve had times when something has happened and you notice a change in yourself. Notice these changes and ask  yourself what they could mean. For yourself, its relatively easy to find the cause. In others, it may be a mind read. For example, flushing of the skin can be embarrassment or excitement or a hot flush. Unless we ask, we won’t know. I feel a blog coming on that goes into this in more depth.
  • Behavioural flexibility – this is one of the presuppositions of NLP – The person who has the most flexibility is in charge of of the system. So if we are heading for our goals and we notice, through monitoring our results or noticing small changes in our physiology, that we are off track, then change what you are doing.
  • Operating from an excellent psychological and physiological base –I am currently working on having excellence in my physiology – increasing my fitness and reducing my weight. I feel as though I have a good psychological base, however my resilience can fluctuate and when it does, I look at the reasons for this and take some action.

For a change I thought I’d base this blog on a typical client’s challenge. This person is one of many who come and see me in order to move on in their life and get “success” – whatever that means to them. This client thought that they were positive but they weren’t getting success and when we went into the details, actually they had a lot of negativity from  things in the past which they had suppressed. So they were telling themselves that they were positive and ignoring the little voice inside that said – “yes – but…..”

They were bored and procrastinating due to a fear which we uncovered and then removed.

There had been trauma with relationships, bullying and other incidents which had led to them self sabotaging and not effectively running a business which meant a lot to them. Their values (motivators) were all about moving away from what they didn’t want rather than towards what they didn’t want. Their top value was peace when we elicited them and this was because they didn’t want conflict. The second one was Self – Belief which was because they felt not good enough and was avoiding that thought.

So this person’s limiting beliefs were:

  • I’m not good enough
  • I won’t be respected
  • I can’t do what I want
  • Life would be worse if I am successful

And they got stuck- not surprisingly.

So we removed all of the beliefs, plus some associated ones, using NLP and Time Line Therapy and my Breakthrough process and they became very excited by life!

An Effective Way to Deal with Anxiety

Anxiety can be disabling and cause you to get stuck

I’ve had quite a lot of phone calls recently from people who are feeling anxious. Sometimes they are on medication and have tried many ways to reduce the anxiety but it doesn’t seem to be doing the trick.

While it may be controversial to many who think that it is a medical condition and can’t be solved simply, I believe that it is easy to solve in many cases. After all, my experience as a GP versus how I help people now says that this is the case for many! Tad James, the founder of the American Board of NLP, says:

“Anxiety is a sign that the unconscious mind is not really focusing on what it really wants”

People with anxiety often have reasons or excuses as to why they can’t do what they really want and therefore become anxious. People also “label themselves” as anxious people and this doesn’t help as they then live their life expecting to be anxious. And they find it difficult to make decisions.

What if everyone could design their future by letting go of unhelpful and limiting things from the past and become happy??

Now there’s a thought!

I don’t know if  you’ve been aware of this – its SO important! To have great health which directly affects your results, means that you need to think and feel in a way that enables this. Your reality, which is created by you from the vast amount of information coming into your brain, gives you an emotional state which affects all of your cells in your body. I expect you’ve known people who have felt sad or frightened or guilty by events in their life and they end up by becoming ill. Cancer, High Blood Pressure, Infertility, Depression, and many other “illnesses” – caused by how we think.

All of our cells have all of our memories within them and we switch our genetic information on and off with how we think in general.

Last Minute Panics

You know the scenario- you’ve had some time to get a task done and have put it off. It’s nearly the deadline and you haven’t really got time to do the task now and you get anxious.  You realise that you could have taken control over  your thoughts and actions at a much earlier stage. Does that sound familiar? And there are other consequences of not getting things done:-

Missing out on getting clients or achieving targets. Feeling rushed and out of control. Doubt creeps in about your abilities. You feel frustrated. You wonder if its all worth it. You don’t enjoy the rest of your life.

Watch the video  below where I give you a couple of quick tips to change this scenario.

 

  • The first tip is to timetable your task into your diary – Every time you get a task to do, particularly when  you know it’s important and that its the sort of thing you’ve put off in the past, get you diary out and put the task into the diary. If its a big task, chunk it down into individual components and put those into your diary. It’s amazing – you will suddenly realise that there are no longer last minute panics. It’ also another way to make sure that you have the capacity to undertake the task or whether you need to make choices.
  • Tip number two is to notice when you put something off when you know you need to do it there and then. There’s that internal chatter that you could start to notice.  So it will probably go something like this “I need to do this task, I’ve got time to do it later,I don’t really want to do it now- Ive got other things that I want to do.” Then you don’t do the task and at some stage in the future, you regret that decision and start to get those last minute panics.

Did you know that all of your behaviour is driven by strategies in your head? If we notice our internal chatter in our head,  you can change it. Fixed or Growth Mindset?

I’ve been reading Carole Dweck’s book called “Mindset – the new psychology of success” recently and it has prompted me to look at my own mindset and develop a simple tool to decide which I have – A Fixed or a Growth Mindset – and  I would love to share it with you.

The trigger for this – I was in Sri Lanka a month or so ago and was feeling envious of some back packers that were passing by when our guide said to me “You are too old to go back packing! “ I felt defensive about it at the time and before I knew where I was, I had gathered my friends and colleagues to prove him wrong – At the time I thought this was a growth mindset, but when I sat and thought about it, it was more of a fixed mindset- an instinctive “he’s wrong and I’m right” reaction.

I realise what I need to do now is to reflect, ask advice, read books about older people going back packing and decide what I want to do. I’m still looking for people to join me though!!!!!!

Put a mark in between the two statements  and be honest. Some of mine were closer to the left hand side – the fixed mindset- (WHAT?????) and I have some homework to do going forward. I’ll pop my thoughts in my journal and share with you as well.

How to Get Things Out of Your Head

You might have heard me talk about how I got “stuck” in the kitchen?. It was when there was so much going on in my head that there was no room for anything else- let alone a decision about what to do first!!! I recently talked to Jo Bendle at JoBendle.com. She was someone I’ve worked with for a while and was one of my first NLP Training clients. She’s now an amazing business person who travels the world, which is her passion, at the same time as helping people reach their goals by being productive and organised.

The tool that she gave me is called a “brain dump” and it is extremely effective and something I am doing weekly now. Listen to the video and take an hour to do this brain dump. It really helps to prioritise and get the important things done!!

So get a couple of pieces of paper and a pen, clear your diary , turn your phone and computer off and make a list of absolutely everything that you have to do. Absolutely everything that is in your head.  In detail! Keep your “sorting head” out of the way until you have put absolutely everything down. Brainstorm, put anything that comes into your head down and enjoy taking the time for yourself !!

Then, when you have everything down, your head will feel much clearer and you will feel calmer – honestly!

You will then be able to sort and prioritise and come up with your most important actions for the month, the week and the day.

Understanding Relationships and Their Complexity

I don’t understand

It’s nearly Valentines Day in the UK and there will be people who are happy in their romantic relationships, people who aren’t and people who don’t have one at all.

However, these are not the only relationships that we have. There are those at work, in our family, our friends or people we meet briefly. And understanding these can make the difference between happiness and unhappiness because some relationships “work well” and others “don’t work well”.

Watch the video below to understand some of this and get in touch with me if you are struggling with relationships with other people. The differences that are at a level outside of our conscious awareness have the ability to challenge that happiness and the video describes the reason for it.

Here’s the thing – Everyone is different!

We all have different memories and experiences throughout our life which affect our feelings about relationships. And we often have negative anchors which keep dragging us back to previous relationships.

We all have different values for our life, our work and our relationships, so our drivers or motivators are different to other peoples.

We have different beliefs and these will be different for different people. And of course, our beliefs are right and other peoples’ are wrong ???

And we have different Meta Programmes. These are very unconscious and are the reason for feeling as though we are “on a different page” to someone else. The PDF is fun to do with another person and that will give you a lot of insights about the realtionship that you have with them and greater understanding of them.

If you understand how you work differently to people that you want a relationship with, you can adapt your behaviour or at least have a laugh about it!
